Between Grief and Hope Lies the Storm

The world tends to think of The Philippines in news headlines, often revolving around devastating aftermaths of typhoons, to which we are no stranger. Located in the typhoon belt of the Pacific, an average of 20 typhoons hit our shores annually, displacing hundreds of thousands of people, destroying homes, and taking lives.

Natural disasters are part of the fabric Filipino history. As climate change continues to disproportionately affect communities living in poverty, this project is an urgent effort to chronicle, study, and explore the memories and imagination of people directly affected by typhoons in the Philippines.

Between Grief and Hope Lies the Storm attempts to reconstruct the practice of disaster storytelling in the Philippines, by designing a narrative framework built from the bottom up, that accommodates the realities of local communities with more accuracy. It offers a way to process feelings of grief and hope derived from trauma. Such a subaltern framework offers a way into regeneration and transformation for these communities, and propels disaster narratives to the next phase of growing resilience and fostering community action.
