Program

Emerging Islands sees the promise of surftown as a site for shaping a progressive framework for knowledge and identity building that is contingent on the very nature of La Union as a coastal location, but one that also responsibly opens the region up to possible futures.

The Residency

The residency is an offer to artists and thinkers from all backgrounds, art, literature, music, photography, philosophy, and the sciences (both natural and social), to study, work, and play for at least a month in surftown. Artists will have opportunities to interact with the larger community at their own pace, carry out their own research with support from the curatorial team, produce art in a shared workspace environment, and participate in workshops and events they will co-instigate with us.

Studio

Resident artists are currently housed in Flotsam and Jetsam Beach Hostel, where they have 24-hour access to a shared studio space on the hostel’s top floor, with views of the West Philippine Sea and the foothills of the Cordillera. The studio is equipped with work desks, WiFi, hot coffee, and cold water. Bean bags, a wraparound balcony, and a growing library make the place feel like home. Downstairs, a shared kitchen is available for residents to prepare their meals.

Community

Artists in residence contribute to knowledge-sharing community activities, such as workshops, public art, and local collaborations.

Selection Process

In the pilot stages of our residency program, artists were nominated by the curatorial team of Emerging Islands, as well as current residents and collaborators.

Research

Artists in residence are given the opportunity to conduct field research, and are invited to explore LU-based scholarship through our partnerships with local libraries, archives, and educational institutions

Artist Output

Residents of the program must work towards the realization of a work of art that contributes to the current curatorial theme, the process and materials of which will be collected and presented in a group exhibit or publication.
